Should I get a PSA test?

US guidelines (from the US Preventive Services Task Force) advise men aged 55 to 69 to decide with their doctor whether to have a PSA test. PSA is a blood test that can find prostate cancer early.

It can also lead to tests and treatment you did not need. From age 70, the guidelines advise against the test. If you are Black, or your father, brother or son had prostate cancer (a first-degree relative), your risk is higher. Ask your doctor about the test before you turn 55.
